The idea of the thunder shirt is basically a compression shirt that is supposed to keep a dog calm during a thunderstorm. However, I see many people not using it in an ideal way. When thunder starts and the dog is already starting to get anxiety, people put the thunder shirt in hopes of calming the dog down. The problem with that is that it’s likely too late at that point to have the dog achieve calmness because the anxiety was already triggered. The more times the shirt is put on when thunder happens and anxiety is triggered, the dog will begin to associate the shirt with the thunder and anxiety. Instead, we want the dog to associate the thunder shirt with calmness and relaxation. To do that, make sure to exercise your dog so they are fulfilled. Then, when they are going to rest and recover from the exercise you provided, you can put the shirt on. The more this happens, the more the dog will associate the thunder shirt with resting and relaxation. Then, you will do the same protocol before a storm, significant exercise, put shirt on before storm when dog is resting and then provide calm confident leadership during the storm. Every dog is different and may need a nuanced approach to overcoming anxiety, fear, and panic from thunderstorms. Using a leash to prevent the dog from pacing and hiding can help as well.
